Protesters want Afghan war-crime trials

KABUL, Afghanistan, April 30 (UPI) -- A crowd of protesters demonstrated Monday in Kabul, Afghanistan, against war crimes, accusing Afghan leaders and the United States of ignoring past abuses.

The protests highlighted war crimes of 1978, when the Democractic Republic Party of Afghanistan toppled the government of Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan, and the 1992 fall of a pro-Soviet government, Khaama Press reported.

Demonstrators linked to the Solidarity Party of Afghanistan burned photos of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Democractic Republic Party leaders, mujahedin and Taliban leaders. They accused Kabul and Washington of appointing alleged war criminals to top government posts rather than trying them for war crimes.
