HAKKARI, Turkey, April 29 (UPI) -- Grenades the Turkish military found in shelters held by the Kurdish Workers' Party came from Iran, lending credence to rumors Iran supports the PKK, police say.
Turkish police and military forces seized the hand grenades among other weapons and food during a search of Hakkari's Cukurca district for PKK terrorists last week, the Hakkari Police Department said.
Authorities did not find any terrorists during the search and believe they moved into forested areas with the arrival of spring.
Allegations that Iran has provided assistance to the PKK have surfaced in recent months -- some PKK terrorists have confessed to indirect support from Tehran during interrogations, Today's Zaman reported Sunday.
In one instance, a captured PKK member allegedly told Turkish officials the party rents a hospital in Nagadeh, Iran, to treat PKK members injured by Turkish armed forces.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party, known by its Kurdish-language initials PKK, seeks an independent Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey. The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
