KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, April 28 (UPI) -- Gunmen fatally shot two police officers inside a governor's compound in southern Afghanistan Saturday, the Interior Ministry said.

Sediq Seddiqi, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said the two gunmen entered the compound in Kandahar with pistols hidden inside their boots, CNN said.

The gunmen began sporadic shooting and continued firing 20 minutes before being killed by Afghan security forces, Seddiqi said.

CNN said Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message.
