Firebomb rattles India's grand prix team

MANAMA, Bahrain, April 20 (UPI) -- Two members of the Force India team decided to leave Bahrain before Sunday's grand prix following a firebomb incident that involved team members, police said.

Four Force of India technicians were riding near the outskirts of the capital of Manama when someone threw a firebomb near their car, the Financial Times reported.

Police said there was no evidence that the Force India team was the target but two of the occupants of the vehicle received permission to leave.

The two decided to return home, fearing for their safety, officials said.

Britain's Guardian reported that Force India spokesman Will Hings said: "Nobody was hurt from our team. We were not targeted directly by Molotov cocktails."

The Bahrain International Circuit described the incident as isolated "involving a handful of illegal protesters acting violently towards police."

Bahrain has been dealing with protests since a democracy movement erupted more than a year ago.

Protesters have called for three days of demonstrations in advance of Sunday's grand prix with a large rally scheduled for Friday afternoon, The Guardian reported.

Last year's race was called off because of civil unrest but the motorsport's governing body has said safety conditions have sufficiently improved to permit this year's race to be run.
