ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, April 19 (UPI) -- Pakistan is pushing for sped-up peace negotiations with India after a Himalayan avalanche along the countries' disputed border killed 124 Pakistani troops.
Pakistani army chief Ashfaq Pervez Kayani Wednesday supported a proposal to demilitarize the glacial border between Pakistan and India, the British newspaper The Guardian reported.

Speaking from the avalanche site where rescue workers have been unable to retrieve any of the bodies since the avalanche struck on April 8, Kayani said the countries need "peace coexistence."
He further said a negotiated settlement would be beneficial for both countries.
Pallam Raju, India's defense minister, said he was "pleased" with Kayani's remarks.
