ADELAIDE, Australia, April 19 (UPI) -- A man who stabbed and killed his wife in front of 300 people at an Adelaide, Australia, convention center was sentenced Thursday to at least 26 years in prison.
Zialloh Abrahimzadeh, 57, was given a life sentence, the Adelaide Advertiser reported. He pleaded guilty in mid-trial.
Zahra Abrahimzadeh, his estranged wife, was killed in March 2010 during a Persian cultural festival. The stabbing was seen by hundreds of people and filmed by security cameras.
The couple's son, Arman, read a statement from the family after the hearing that blamed both his father and police for his mother's death.
"The agonizing and searing pain that this coward has caused us is one that will last a lifetime," he said. "The malicious nature and character of the criminal is one thing, but the actual fact is that this murder could have been prevented. We saw this murder coming and it could have been stopped by authorities."
Justice John Sulan said the killing was the last and worst act in two decades of domestic abuse Abrahimzadeh inflicted on his wife and family.
