Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu told reporters his force has spent $2 million above its normal operating budget investigating the violence and arson that shook the city June 15 when the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup to the Boston Bruins in Game 7.
He said the ongoing investigation has seen as many 70 officers transferred to the riot investigation, The (Vancouver) Province reported.
Chu said in all, $5 million has been spent on the riot by his force, but much of that would have gone to other investigations.
Other police forces in surrounding jurisdictions who responded to the mayhem spent some $2 million in overtime and investigative roles, he said.
Damages to 89 businesses and 113 vehicles were estimated at $3 million, the Province said.
Reviewing more than 5,000 hours of video, investigators have pegged 15,000 criminal acts among 65,000 people, but so far, only 175 people have been charged as Crown prosecutors review proposed charges, the newspaper said.
