VALPARAISO, Chile, April 17 (UPI) -- Minor damage and one death were reported following a powerful earthquake near the port city of Valparaiso, Chile, officials said Tuesday.

The late Monday temblor measured 6.5 magnitude and was felt in the Chilean capital of Santiago 69 miles away, the Earthquake Information Center of the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Regional Mayor Raul Celis told CNN a 72-year-old man died of a heart attack during an evacuation following the quake.

No tsunami warning was issued by Chile's Hydrographic and Oceanic Service.

A Canadian delegation in Santiago for Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit was reported unhurt.

The quake occurred in the same area as an 8.8 magnitude quake in February 2010 that killed hundreds of people.

Chile is in the Pacific Basin's so-called "Ring of Fire," prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanoes.
