ATHENS, Greece, April 12 (UPI) -- Greek voters head to the polls on May 6 to elect a new government, interim Prime Minister Lucas Papademos said.

Papademos made the announcement of elections Wednesday.

Fotis Kouvelis, the leader of Greece's rising leftist party Democratic Left, has ruled out the possibility of joining a coalition government with the Panhellenic Socialist Movement party, known by the acronym PASOK, and New Democracy, raising the possibility of a second round of elections, ekathimerini.com reported Thursday.

Kouvelis, speaking on Skai radio, said Democratic Left doesn't plan to support austerity policies put in place by the other two parties.

A Public Issue opinion poll for Kathimerini and Skai TV suggests PASOK and ND don't have enough support to form a government on their own.

The survey showed New Democracy with 19 percent and PASOK with 14.5 percent of voter support. The two parties need a combined total of 36 percent to have a chance of forming a coalition, ekathimerini.com said.

"If the May 6 elections do not produce a clear outcome then it is possible that we will have to go to a new round," Kouvelis said.
