2,477 homes submerged in Russian floods

MOSCOW, April 12 (UPI) -- Nearly 2,500 homes have been affected by spring floods in Russia, the emergencies ministry said Thursday.

A total of 2,477 homes have been submerged by floodwater, affecting 5,223 residents, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

More than 1,000 people have been evacuated, the ministry said.

The most severe damage has been reported in the Republic of Tatarstan and the Saratov and Samara regions.

Over 4,700 towns are expected to be affected by flooding in Yakutia, the Maritime, Khabarovsk and Krasnoyarsk Territories, and the Irkutsk region in Siberia, the ministry said, with risk zones including about 1,900 sections of highway, 378 railroad sections and 563 bridges.
