Swedes face toilet paper shortage

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 11 (UPI) -- A labor union is threatening to create a toilet paper shortage in Sweden by preventing toilet tissue from leaving factories, officials said.

The action set for April 23 could wipe out the supply of toilet paper and paper towels in stores across the country, the Swedish news agency TT reported Wednesday.

The threat stems from protracted wage talks between the Commercial Employees' Union and the Svensk Handel retail employees association.

The two parties have failed to come to terms on a pay hike and the union has threatened to go on strike Friday if no agreement is reached.

Workers are seeking a 4.5 percent boost in pay. Svensk Handel has offered 2.6 percent.

In a show of solidarity, the Pappers labor union has announced it will block deliveries from several Swedish toilet paper factories beginning April 23 if a strike occurs.
