WUHAN, China, April 10 (UPI) -- The key member of a Chinese gang offering illegal ultrasound gender tests to pregnant women has been arrested, police in Hubei province said Tuesday.
The suspect, identified only by the surname Hu, was apprehended after a pregnant woman reported she had received a gender identification ultrasound in a private car, China's Xinhua news agency reported.
The test, which takes only a few minutes, costs about $79.
Gang members allegedly keep watch while Hu conducts the ultrasound in the back seat of the car.
Police said a man surnamed Peng allegedly confessed to acting as a middleman for the gang.
It was the third time Hu, 44, has been implicated in administering fetal gender tests.
She was imprisoned for six months in 2010 on similar charges.
The number of male births in China has increased since the 1980s when ultrasound technology allowed pregnant women to learn the gender of the baby they were carrying.
