Egypt halts constitution-writing

CAIRO, April 10 (UPI) -- An Egyptian court Tuesday moved to block Parliament from creating the Constituent Assembly, halting the process of creating Egypt's new constitution.

Egypt Independent reported the decision challenges the legitimacy of the assembly on the basis of criticism it has received for being dominated by Islamists.

Judge Ali Fekry told The Cairo Administrative Court it "halts the implementation of the decision by Parliament's speaker to from the Constitutional Assembly to draft the constitution."

The decision can be appealed, however, if it is backed by a higher court, it becomes final.

Bikyamasr.com reported Islamist members of Parliament have pushed for members of Parliament to be included in the constitution-writing body, a decision considered unusual by legal experts and liberal critics.

The decision comes on the heels of a lawsuit calling out the disproportionate number of Islamists who hold seats in the assembly.

Parliament formed the assembly in late March to draft Egypt's new constitution.
