9 dead in Colombia fighting

CARMEN DE ATRATO, Colombia, April 8 (UPI) -- Weekend fighting between Colombia security forces and rebels left at least nine people dead, the military said.

Colombia Reports said Sunday the death toll included at least six soldiers and three FARC guerrillas.

The fighting took place Saturday in the western Colombian department of Choco when the rebels attacked security forces in an attempt to disable energy towers near Carmen de Atrato.

The newspaper El Espectador reported the army's ability to send reinforcements was hindered by landslides in the region.
