MORNE TAPION, Haiti, April 8 (UPI) -- A truck carrying merchants and goods crashed in Haiti, killing 27 people and wounding 36 others, officials said.
The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Morne Tapion -- the truck, carrying more than 65 passengers, was heading to Les Cayes from Port-au-Prince, Haitilibre.com reported Saturday.
Passengers who got off the truck along the route said the vehicle was having mechanical problems. The brakes stopped working and the truck overturned in Morne Tapion, the news Web site reported.
Patients were taken to the nearby Notre-Dame of Petit-Goave, though a lack of supplies meant many were transferred to larger hospitals by the Red Cross, Haitilibre.com said.
