Investigations reveal Russian police crime

KAZAN, Russia, April 6 (UPI) -- The death of a suspect who Russian officers allegedly sodomized with a bottle has prompted investigations revealing police-related crimes, authorities say.

Kazan resident Sergei Nazarov, 52, died shortly after his arrest March 9 while being treated for severe colon damage at a hospital. He told doctors he was raped and beaten by five police officers who have since been discharged from the force and detained, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

The incident sparked a spate of internal police investigations ordered in late March by the head of Russia's Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin.

The committee said Friday it opened an investigation into the alleged electrical torture of a suspect in Krasnoyarsk.

A court in the Kostroma region this week sentenced two police officers to three- and four-year suspended terms for beating two men to obtain confessions, RIA Novosti said.

"When they were rejected, they beat one of the men, then handcuffed the other and beat him," an Investigative Committee statement said.
