COZUMEL, Mexico, April 6 (UPI) -- A cruise ship en route to Mexico rescued 23 Cuban citizens from a small boat, officials said.

Someone spotted the boat carrying 19 men and four women as Royal Caribbean International's 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas was sailing from Falmouth, Jamaica, toward Cozumel, Mexico, on Wednesday, The Miami Herald reported.

Those rescued received food, water and medical treatment aboard the ship.

Royal Caribbean notified the U.S. Coast Guard and the 23 people were removed from the ship in Cozumel Thursday.

The cruise ship had left Port Everglades in Florida Saturday for a seven-night cruise.
