Second polar bear killed in Newfoundland

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, April 4 (UPI) -- For the second time this spring, an aggressive polar bear was shot and killed in northern Newfoundland, police said.

Two workers in the Puffin Island Lighthouse were startled Tuesday afternoon when a polar bear began approaching the tower and then tried to get in, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Worker Joe Goodyear told the broadcaster he and a coworker opened a window and began yelling and making loud noises, which worked at driving the bear away.

However, the bear headed towards the town of Greenspond, where children were about to be let out of school, the report said.

Under orders from provincial wildlife officials, Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers shot and killed the bear, officials said.

Last week in the coastal town of Goose Cove in the Northern Peninsula, wildlife officials shot and killed a polar bear after it attempted to get into four homes and killed several farm animals, the CBC said.

Polar bears are classified as a vulnerable species by international scientific groups.
