Canada jails, deports human traffickers

HAMILTON, Ontario, April 3 (UPI) -- Members of Canada's largest known chain of human traffickers were sentenced Tuesday to jail and deportation in Hamilton, Ontario.

A day after pleading guilty to federal charges including human trafficking and being part of a criminal organization, Joszef Domotor, 45, was sentenced to six years in prison followed by deportation, the Hamilton Spectator reported.

Because of time already served, he will spend just two more years in penitentiary.

His 31-year-old wife Kristina Csaszar was sentenced to the 11 months she has already spent in jail and will be deported.

Both are Hungarian gypsies who were granted refugee status in December 2008.

"These individuals have lied their way into Canada," Superior Court Justice Stephen Glithero said before sentencing them.

Since 2008, court heard how they and 13 others lured at least 19 male victims from Hungary to work in construction. Some workers were forced to sleep on mattresses in the couple's lavish home, weren't paid and lived as slaves, the report said. All of them were ordered to apply for welfare and apply for refugee status, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.

The 13 other people in the ring have already pleaded guilty to various other charges, the Spectator said.
