Police search for ax attacker

JERUSALEM, April 2 (UPI) -- A manhunt is under way for an Arab youth who attacked and wounded an ultra-Orthodox man with an ax near Damascus Gate in east Jerusalem, police said.

The ax-wielding Arab youth attacked the Jewish man, hitting him in the head with the ax, police told the Hebrew daily Maariv. The 55-year-old worshipper was on his way to attend morning prayers at the Western Wall. He struggled with his assailant who fled the scene on foot, police told the daily. Police are treating the incident as a terror attack, officials told the newspaper.

Medics who arrived at the scene treated the injured man who sustained light head injuries and was evacuated to Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem, police said.

Last month, a Palestinian teenager stabbed a 19-year-old female soldier on the capital's light rail train, seriously wounding her. The Palestinian teenager was later caught by Israeli security forces while attempting to flee to Palestinian-controlled areas.
