Pakistani court considers acid attack case

KARACHI, Pakistan, April 2 (UPI) -- A Pakistani court was asked Monday to reopen the case of Fakhra Younus, a victim of an acid attack who killed herself in protest of the treatment of women.

Younus, whose face was badly disfigured in 2000 when her husband Bilal Khar allegedly threw acid on her in Pakistan, jumped from the sixth floor of her apartment building in Italy March 17. She left a note saying she killed herself over the silence of law on the atrocities and insensitivity of Pakistani rulers, News Network International, Karachi, reported.

Khar, a former member of Parliament and son of former Punjab Chief Minister Ghulam Mustafa Khar, was acquitted in the attack. A petition to declare the 2003 judgement illegal and reopen the case was heard Monday by Justices Maqbool Baqar and Shafi Siddiqui, The Express Tribune reported.
