The defense in the trial of Robert Mikelsons used photos and tape recordings aimed at eroding the image of a cold-hearted and unrepentant predator who allegedly molested 67 children at child-care centers in Amsterdam.
Netherlands Radio International said some of the images showed Mikelsons apparently weeping. One of the presiding judges told his lawyer, "The question is what that emotion means."
The prosecution contends Mikelsons' emotions generally border on arrogant. Netherlands Radio Internationale said authorities said the Latvian immigrant was bizarrely proud of the child pornography images he created and that his public apologies to the parents of his alleged victims were insincere and downplayed the seriousness of his alleged acts.
The trial of Mikelsons and his male husband, Richard van Olffen, was expected to last several weeks, the radio service said.
