Turkish general on trial for coup plot

SILIVRI, Turkey, March 28 (UPI) -- A former Turkish military chief accused of plotting to overthrow the government says he will not defend himself against terrorism charges.

Retired Gen. Ilker Basbug stormed out of a courtroom Tuesday to protest the trial, which is being held in the Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court in Silivri.

Basbug said the allegations are against Turkey's armed forces and should be heard by the Supreme Court, Today's Zaman reported. The Supreme Court, however, said the charges are related to terrorism and belong in criminal court.

"I will not make a defense and I will not answer any of your questions," Basbug said Tuesday at his trial.

The retired general is accused of being involved in a suspected military plot devised to overthrow Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party. Military staff are accused of creating Web sites to disseminate anti-government propaganda.
