Calm returns after Karachi rampage

KARACHI, Pakistan, March 28 (UPI) -- Calm was restored Wednesday in Karachi, Pakistan, after a gun and arson rampage left at least 10 people dead and more than 15 wounded, officials said.

The violence started after gunmen killed activist Mansoor Mukhtar, a member of the liberal, progressive Muttahida Qaumi Movement, at his home early Tuesday, Dawn News reported. His brother was also killed in the attack.

MQM is the dominant political party in Karachi, the newspaper said.

Enraged over the shootings, protesters set fire to more than 45 vehicles, including police vehicles, and armed youth roamed freely, the Nation reported.

Dawn News said life appeared to have returned to normal Wednesday as MQM called for a day of mourning.
