The quake's epicenter, about 6 miles deep, was about 53 miles east of Morioka on Honshu Island, and about 318 miles north, northeast of Tokyo.

A fire official in Miyako City said no injuries or damage were reported, CNN said.

Japan's public broadcaster, NHK, said no irregular activity is reported from nuclear plants in the area.

A 4.9-magnitude quake, 21.3 miles deep, was recorded 40 minutes earlier, USGS said. Its epicenter was about 54 miles south-southeast of Mito and about 71 miles east of Tokyo, USGS said.

Slightly more than a year ago, a 9-magnitude earthquake triggered a huge tsunami off Japan, resulting in thousands of deaths and the world's worst nuclear crisis in a quarter century.
