MULTAN, Pakistan, March 26 (UPI) -- Police in Pakistan were searching Monday for a man who allegedly threw acid at his wife after a dispute, officials said.

Police said the man, identified only as Maqsood, threw the acid at his wife, Shama, in Multan, a city in the Punjab province, and fled, Independent News Pakistan reported.

Shama, a mother of four children, was taken to Nishtar Hospital for treatment of serious burn wounds.

The acid did not come in contact with Shama's face, doctors said.

The dispute began over Shama's asking her husband for money to pay for household needs.

There is widespread concern about frequent acid attacks on women in southern Punjab, INP said. Critics say law enforcement authorities and women's advocacy groups should do more to stop the attacks.
