TORONTO, March 21 (UPI) -- Distrust of Muslims is running as high as 52 percent in Canada, a poll on race relations published Wednesday indicates.

Last weekend, Leger Marketing polled 1,522 Canadians online on attitudes on races and religions. The survey was done for the Association for Canadian Studies in Montreal and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation in Toronto for release on Wednesday's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Within those who expressed distrust for Muslims, 42 percent said they felt the negativity was brought on by Muslims themselves, Postmedia News reported.

By other faiths, 71 percent of indicated they trusted Protestants, 70 percent trusted Catholics, 69 percent trusted Jews and 64 percent trusted Indians, the survey showed.

Asked where racism is most prevalent in the lives, 49 percent said it came from the Internet. Radio and television came second with 19 percent.

The survey had an error margin of 2.9 percentage points.

It came out as Prime Minister Stephen Harper was departing for Asia. He first issued a statement on the international observation of racism elimination.

"Canada is not only combating racism at home; our government is also working with international organizations to promote racial equality abroad by strengthening human rights education in developing countries," Harper said.
