Major Quebec tobacco sweep nets 20

MONTREAL, March 21 (UPI) -- About 250 Canadian police officers executed raids in Quebec Wednesday, seizing illegal tobacco products and arresting 20 people, including four firefighters.

The raids involved the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, provincial officers and various local forces southwest of Montreal who executed 22 search warrants, The (Montreal) Gazette reported.

The raids targeted contraband cigarettes, cigars and tobacco, but Sgt. Bruno Beaulieu of the Quebec provincial police said he wouldn't speculate if it was being distributed from the Akwasasne Mohawk Indian reservation that straddles the U.S. and Canadian border.

Some of those arrested were also charged with marijuana possession as well, the newspaper said.

The fewer than 1,500 residents in the town of Godmanchester essentially have no fire department after the town chief and three firefighters were arrested, The Gazette said.
