BAGHDAD, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- Violence in Iraq peaked in 2006 when terrorism and insurgency cost the lives of 21,539 Iraqis, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

That year, 39,329 Iraqis were wounded, Aswat al-Iraq reported.

From April 5, 2004, to Dec. 31, 2011, 69,263 Iraqis were killed and 239,133 wounded, spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said. By 2011, the violence had dropped considerably with 2,777 deaths recorded.

During the seven-year period, 23,898 people were reported killed in Baghdad, the highest total of any city.
