Nigerian attacks kill eight

JOS, Nigeria, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- The Islamic militant group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on a church in Jos, Nigeria, that killed five people,officials said.

Dozens of people were injured.

The bomber and an alleged accomplice were among the victims of the Sunday attack at the church -- the Nigerian headquarters of the Church of Christ.

Three okada (motorcycle taxi) riders were killed in a subsequent rampage by Christian youth who set fire to shops belonging to Muslim Hausas, the Daily Trust, Lagos, Nigeria reported.

Boko Haram, which has waged an insurgency against the government since 2009, also claimed responsibility for attacks Friday in Gombe and Kano as well as an attack on primary schools in Maiduguri, the newspaper said. The group seeks strict implementation of its interpretation of Shariah (the legal code of Islam) across the country.
