The state-run TBA Sarmiento train was filled with passengers on their daily commute, the newspaper said.

Transport Secretary Juan Pablo Schiavi said the train hit the platform at the Once train station at 12 mph. He said the impact of the crash caused the second car to be pushed nearly 20 feet into the first.

Alberto Crescenti, head of the SAME ambulance service, said at least 15 ambulance teams were treating the injured, Telam news agency reported.

A 7-year-old boy who had been trapped three hours in one of the front cars was among the first reported fatalities.

At least 70 people were pulled from the wreckage and taken to Ramos Mejia Hospital and Durand Hospital.
