Man charged with killing vicar, teacher

BRISTOL, England, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- A suspect was formally charged Wednesday with killing a retired teacher and a Church of England priest in western England.

Stephen Farrow, 47, faces two counts of murder and one of burglary, the Worcester News reported. He was arrested on suspicion of murder Sunday in Hastings on the south coast.

Farrow is to appear in court Thursday, Avon and Somerset Police said.

Betty Yates, 77, was found stabbed to death in her remote cottage in Bewdley, Worcestershire. Investigators believe she was killed Jan. 2.

The Rev. John Suddards was killed last week in his vicarage in Thornbury, a market town about 10 miles north of Bristol. Investigators quickly noted the similarity between his killing and that of Yates.

Suddards, a former lawyer who became a priest after surviving a serious car crash when he was 31, transferred to Thornbury from Essex last year. Colleagues said he was known for welcoming those who seemed to be in need of help to his vicarage.
