4 Americans killed in Africa crash ID'd

CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Department Monday identified four Air Force personnel killed in a weekend plane crash in Djibouti.

Killed when their U-28 aircraft crashed Saturday near Camp Lemonnier were Capt. Ryan P. Hall, 30, Colorado Springs; Capt. Nicholas S. Whitlock, 29, Newnan, Ga.; 1st Lt. Justin J. Wilkens, 26, Bend, Ore.; and Senior Airman Julian S. Scholten, 26, Upper Marlboro, Md. The four were assigned to special operations and intelligence squadrons based at Hurlburt Field in Florida.

The Stars and Stripes reported the cause of the crash, which occurred about 6 miles from Djibouti International Airport, had yet to be determined.

The newspaper noted Camp Lemonnier is the United States' only major military base in Africa.
