20 dead in Mexico prison riot

APODACA, Mexico, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A prison riot in Apodaca, Mexico, left at least 20 dead and several wounded Sunday, prison officials said.

The riot took place Sunday morning at the Center for Social Rehabilitation Apodaca between prisoners and guards in sections E and D, where low and moderately dangerous inmates are housed, El Universal reported.

Once guards forced entry into the living areas where the riot was occurring, inmates started a fire, burning their belongings, said Jorge Domene Zambrano, public safety spokesman for the state of Nuevo Leon.

He said the causes of the deaths have yet to be determined -- all 20 bodies were transported to a hospital for identification.

The riot is the second such incident to happen in Mexico's prison system since Oct. 13 when seven inmates were killed and three wounded in a fight between rival gangs at a Cadereyta facility.
