Frosty hearing for British pol, ex-wife

LONDON, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Former British Energy Secretary Chris Huhne and his ex-wife kept their distance in court Thursday as they were charged with perverting the cause of justice.

Huhne and Vicky Pryce were ordered to sit together for the 6-minute hearing in the dock, the space reserved for defendants in English courtrooms, The Independent reported. But they showed up at Westminster Magistrate's Court separately, sat as far apart as they could, left separately and barely looked at each other.

Their legal troubles date back to 2003, when Pryce allegedly agreed to tell police she was behind the wheel when their car was caught speeding by a traffic camera. Huhne could have had his license suspended for excessive points if he had taken responsibility.

Huhne, 57, and Pryce, 59, an economist, separated in 2010 after 26 years of marriage and he admitted having an affair with a member of his staff. He resigned from the cabinet in early February because of the criminal charge.

Another hearing was set for March 2 in Southwark Crown Court.
