9 children killed in West Bank bus crash

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Nine kindergarten children and one adult died Thursday and dozens of people were injured when a bus collided with a truck north of Jerusalem, authorities said.

The bus, carrying children from a kindergarten in the Shuafat refugee camp on a field trip to a park near Ramallah, overturned and caught fire after the collision, Haaretz reported.

The accident occurred not far from the Hizma checkpoint separating Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Emergency crews were treating the injured at the scene.

Three of those who died were removed from burning vehicles, an emergency services paramedic said.

"This is a very serious accident. The place looks like a battlefield," said the paramedic. "The cars were in pieces and two went up in flames."

In May, four people died in a head-on collision between a tour bus and a Palestinian vehicle.
