Lawyer: No evidence in Mubarak trial

CAIRO, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A lawyer for a former Egyptian official on trial alongside former President Hosni Mubarak says prosecutors have no evidence of wrongdoing.

Sunday's court session began with verbal sparring after the lawyer for Ismail al-Shaer, former deputy interior minister for the Cairo security sector, offered condolences to the families of the slain protesters' families, al-Masry al-Youm reported. The lawyer, identified by the newspaper only as Gamal, said, however, the accusations against his client, and the other defendants are too generalized.

"If anyone thinks that this trial holds suspects accountable for charges included in the case, the documents have no evidence. I demand the acquittal of the ninth suspect [Shaer] and the other suspects," the attorney said.

Mubarak, former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly and six of his assistants are charged with being responsible for government forces opening fire on unarmed protesters in the early days of the revolution, Ahram Online reported.

Mubarak also faces corruption charges along with his sons, Gamal and Alaa, and business tycoon Hussein Salem.
