Russia shaken by teen suicides

MOSCOW, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- At least five suicides among teenagers were reported this week in Russia, which has the highest rate of teen suicides in Europe, officials said.

The latest death was reported when the Russian children rights commissioner said a seventh-grade boy hanged himself inside a garage this week, RIA Novosti reported.

Local media reports said the boy recently was banned from surfing Internet social networking sites, which may have led to the suicide.

Earlier this week, reports of the suicides of two 14-year-old girls who were best friends shook the country. The girls died after jumping from the roof of a 14-floor building in Lobnya, just outside Moscow. An investigation indicated the girls had cut classes for two weeks and were worried about the consequences.

A 14-year-old boy jumped from the window of his 12th-floor apartment after he reportedly was accused of stealing a classmate's camera and fought with his father, RIA Novosti said.

A 13-year old boy in Yakutsk left school early complaining of illness and was found later by his mother in a bedroom, where he hanged himself with a bathrobe belt, officials said. Friends said the boy was upset over his parents' divorce and the move to Yakutsk.
