Rogozin: Streamline weapons procurement

MOSCOW, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Russian Defense Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the country's defense industry must prepare for "brief and unpredictable" wars.

Rogozin's comments came Wednesday at a meeting with defense industry officials, RIA Novosti reported.

"The production of weaponry must reflect the fact that modern wars will be brief and unpredictable in nature; they will not rage on for years," Rogozin said.

"We need a very compact, mobile, armed-to-the-teeth army and fleet that instill fear in our enemies and strategic nuclear forces that would ensure our [national] security."

During the Soviet era, he said, "the Defense Ministry used to order a wide range of military equipment without even knowing what it was for. Today, it's all scrap metal. We cannot use or sell it."

The country has to abandon that approach, Rogozin said.

Rogozin, charged with streamlining the development and production of weapons, proposed creating strong connections between weapons designers and manufacturers, and the defense industry.
