Fourteen dead in Turkish clashes with PKK

ANKARA, Turkey, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Thirteen Kurdish militants and one Turkish soldier died Thursday in clashes in Turkey's east and southeast, officials said.

Cihan news agency said nine members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, also known as PKK, were killed and three were wounded in a clash with Turkish soldiers during a military operation near Bagcilar in eastern Bingol province when the militants refused to surrender, Today's Zaman reported.

One Turkish soldier was killed and six others were injured in a series of PKK attacks on security buildings in the southeast province of Hakkari. Today's Zaman said simultaneous attacks were reported on 10 targets in Cukurca, including the police department. Hakkari Gov. Muammer Turker said four of the attackers were killed in efforts to capture the assailants.

The Cukurca attacks came less than a week after Turkish warplanes bombed three suspected PKK targets in northern Iraq.
