VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A civil jury Thursday found former British Columbia Premier Bill Vander Zalm defamed former provincial official Ted Hughes.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported the provincial Supreme Court jury delivered its verdict during the afternoon in Vancouver.

The Vancouver Sun reported the five-man, two-woman panel ordered Vander Zalm to pay Hughes $60,000.
Hughes, who had been British Columbia's conflict-of-interest commissioner, had sued Vander Zalm over statements he made in a 2008 self-published autobiography.
The newspaper said the jury found Vander Zalm, 77, wrongly suggested Hughes was biased in his 1991 report on Vander Zalm's conduct that led to the premier's resignation.
