Arroyo allowed to stay in treatment

PASAY, Philippines, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Former Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo may remain at the Veterans' Memorial Medical Center for treatment, a judge ruled Thursday.

The Commission on Elections petitioned for Arroyo to be moved to a regular detention cell; however, it did not object to her need for treatment, asking only for doctors to report on her condition.

Pasay Regional Trial Court Judge Jesus Mupas said Arroyo may remain at the hospital, provided her doctors submit monthly reports on her condition, beginning March 10, the Philippine Daily Enquirer reported.

Arroyo attorney Benjamin Santos asked the court to let her stay in the hospital due to her need for continuing treatment and therapy for spinal and thyroid issues.

Arroyo, 64, who was arrested on charges of electoral sabotage on Nov. 18 and moved to the Veterans' Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City Dec. 9.
