Dozens dead in northern Yemen violence

SANAA, Yemen, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Dozens were killed in deadly clashes in northern Yemen as Sunni Muslim Salafists try to force back advancing Shia militants, witnesses said.

A tacit truce in the province of Hajjah between fundamentalist Salafists and Shia-led al-Houthis has fallen apart since the uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh began last year, Bikyamasr.com reported Tuesday.

Sunni tribes battled al-Houthis Sunday and Monday in Kashar as al-Houthis attempted to move further into Sunni territory.

"The clashes continued non-stop for more than 10 hours, leaving at least 40 Houthis as well as 15 tribesmen dead. Not to mention the large number of the unspecified causalities from the two sides," a source told Bikyamasr.com.

Saudi Arabia is urging the Yemeni government to take action, concerned al-Houthis will move beyond Yemen's northern border, the Egyptian news Web site reported.
