The official said scores of militants stormed the security post in the Jogi area of central Kurram Agency in retaliation for a battle that occurred last week.

"The security forces had entered a zone which is considered to be a stronghold of militants. It was a counterattack," the official said.

Tuesday's battle lasted for hours and involved helicopter gunships, the newspaper said.

The Kurram Valley is along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
