Police: Wife slain for bearing no sons

KHANABAD, Afghanistan, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- An Afghan man allegedly killed his wife because she had not yet borne him a son, a police chief said.

Sufi Habib, chief in the Khanabad district of Kunduz province, said Sher Mohammad, 24, was suspected of strangling his wife, Sthorai, 22, after she gave birth to their third daughter, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

The wife's brother told police her mother-in-law had verbally and physically abused her after the births of her first two girls.

Mohammad was allegedly the leader of an armed gang that has been involved in various criminal activities and was affiliated with an anti-Taliban militia commander, the report said.

After the alleged murder, Mohammad took shelter with his gang and was being sought by police.
