DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Mick Jagger canceled plans Tuesday to join British Prime Minister David Cameron at the World Economic Forum, saying he was being "used as a political football."

The 68-year-old Rolling Stones lead singer, now Sir Mick, left Switzerland, releasing a statement giving his reasons for the change of plans, the Daily Mirror reported. A friend told the British newspaper Jagger, who studied at the London School of Economics before launching his music career, was interested in promoting British business at the economics meeting in Davos.

"During my career I have always eschewed party politics and came to Davos as a guest, as I thought it would be stimulating," Jagger said in his statement. "I have always been interested in economics and world events. I now find myself being used as a political football and there has been a lot of comment about my political allegiances which are inaccurate."

Jagger apparently was angered by a news report that Cameron was "tickled pink" by the coup of getting him to Davos.

"This was a non-political event and at no point was there ever any suggestion that Sir Mick was a Conservative," a senior government source told the Mirror.
