West Bank woman freed from bathroom prison

QALQIYLA, West Bank, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Palestinian police said they rescued a young woman who had been locked in a bathroom by her father over a family dispute for more than nine years.

The 20-year-old woman, who apparently had not seen sunlight since she was 11 years old, was turned over to a social worker at a police station and her dad was arrested.

Qalqilya police on the West Bank said the father told them he had imprisoned his daughter in the bathroom after some unspecified family quarrel nearly a decade ago.

Ynetnews.com said officers acting on a tip went to the home Saturday. The father at first refused to unlock the door to the bathroom, saying his daughter was using the facilities.

Officers said they heard a call for help after which the door was opened. They found the frantic woman on the floor next to a pillow and blanket.

Police did not say how many bathrooms were in the house.
