ANKARA, Turkey, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Turkish officials say a NATO early warning radar station is operating in Malatya, about 400 miles southeast of Ankara.

A Turkish foreign ministry spokesman said the site is manned by Turkish and U.S. personnel, CNN reported Tuesday.

Portugal, Poland, Romania and Spain have also agreed to deploy elements of a U.S.-designed European missile defense system to detect threats from the Middle East.

Russia has been asked to participate in the system but is seeking a legal treaty guaranteeing the shield won't be used against Russia's own defense systems. Iran has publicly objected to the shield.
