Mubarak lawyer criticizes prosecutors

CAIRO, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The lawyer for ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak accused prosecutors Tuesday of evading trial ethics and guidelines in presenting their case.

Farid al-Deeb told a Cairo Criminal Court the prosecution wrongly focused on things not dealt with in Mubarak's indictment, Egypt Independent reported.

The former leader is on trial for corruption and involvement in the killing of protesters during the 18-day uprising that led to his removal from power last year.

Deeb said Mubarak's intent to transfer power to his younger son Gamal and his wife's alleged seizure of funds from the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria should not have been addressed in the prosecution's case.

Activists have told Bikyamasr.com if Mubarak receives anything less than the death penalty, there could be massive outrage.

"I don't know what would happen if he is not found guilty and sentenced to death," said Mona Omar, a 22-year-old law student. "I think the country will revolt."

A brother of one of the uprising victims said Mubarak should "face the same fate as our loved ones for what he did to this country."
