The Obeyid Marib tribe took the 34-year-old U.N. Development Program worker Sunday, the Norway Post reported.

The tribe was holding him for ransom, and demanded the release of a tribesman arrested by Yemeni police and charged with killing two soldiers.

The Norwegian Foreign Office asked the Norwegian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, which also deals with Yemen, to look into the matter.

Norway's NRK broadcasting company reported the man was unharmed and allowed to speak to his family in Norway by phone.
